Downsizing

Life is full of changes. Whether your kids have grown up and moved out, your acreage just seems too far from town, or you find yard work just too overwhelming – sometimes downsizing your home is in your best interest. If you have decided that downsizing is the right choice for you, you know that there will be organization that comes with it. Here are some tips to make the downsizing of your home a smooth process for you and your family.

  1. Assess your daily life – decide what items need to be included

Try to take an objective view on your life. Decide what your daily life realistically looks like and begin to eliminate those items that no longer fit your schedule. It is important to look into your future and decide if these are the items you would like to fill your new home with. For example, your home gym used to be a part of your routine but hasn’t been in several years – maybe it is time to sell that equipment before you move.

  1. Organize the nooks and crannies

We all have spaces in our home that we use to put the “things without a home.” These can include junk drawers, attics, and garages. These are the places where we need to take a hard look at some items and decide if it is important that they come along to your new home.

  1. Donate/sell the items that you no longer need

There are always organizations looking to take in unwanted items. Rather than adding to the landfill, try to donate some of the things that may be of use to others. It may also be a good time to host a garage sale, or attempt to sell some things on your preferred social media or online ad website.

  1. Give yourself time

The process of eliminating belongings and downsizing your life should not be an overnight decision. Give yourself time to truly think and adjust to the idea of living without certain things. Take on the challenges of downsizing one room at a time.

  1. When you move into your new home – maximize your storage space.

Once you are in your smaller home, it is important that you do not keep living like you are in a large home. You may not have the storage space that you once had. Therefore, you may need to come up with innovative storage solutions. For example, wall storage, and ottomans can be extremely helpful!
